A computer virus is a type of computer program that, when executed, replicates itself by modifying other computer programs and inserting its own code. When this replication succeeds, the affected areas are then said to be “infected” with a computer virus.

The term “virus” is also misused by extension to refer to other types of malware. “Malware” encompasses computer viruses along with many other forms of malicious software, such as computer “worms”, ransomware, spyware, adware, trojan horses, keyloggers, rootkits, bootkits, malicious Browser Helper Object (BHOs), and other malicious software. The majority of active malware threats are trojan horse programs or computer worms rather than computer viruses.

We live in a world where viruses and malware are pretty normal. But how do they work? Where do they come from? What’s the difference between viruses and malware? Let’s find out on Waste Time.

How do viruses work? Computer Viruses. The scourge of the digital world. We’ve got Trojans, Worms, Macros, Malware, Spyware; all manner of malevolent programs that can destroy files, erase data, steal passwords or just display a nice little message on a given date. We’ll be looking at DOS Viruses, Windows Viruses, Bootsector viruses, infected executables, all within 6 minutes. This video explores the fundamentals of what a computer virus is, how the different types of virus work and we even see some computer viruses in action, and take a look at a few viruses in the field, including the BRAIN virus. The first IBM PC Compatible virus.
